The Woman Question: 1550–2025
Curated by Alison M. Gingeras, this ambitious survey exhibition brings together nearly 200 works by women artists across nearly five centuries—from Renaissance painters to contemporary practitioners—to challenge the myth of women’s absence from art history.
“The Woman Question: 1550–2025” — Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (ul. Marszałkowska 103, 00-110 Warsaw, Poland), runs from November 21, 2025 to May 3, 2026
Exhibition Description
“The Woman Question: 1550–2025” is organised into thematic chapters that address key trajectories in women’s artistic production: heroic allegories (“Femmes Fortes”), self-portraiture as agency (“Palettes & Power”), barriers to education and canonisation (“Education & the Canon”), identity and motherhood (“A Muse of Her Own” / “Of Woman Born”), mysticism and dream imagery (“Surreal Selves”), the unleashed erotic imagination (“No Gate, No Lock, No Bolt”), and women’s roles in conflict (“Wartime Women”). The exhibition juxtaposes works from figures like Artemisia Gentileschi and Sofonisba Anguissola with those of contemporary artists such as Faith Ringgold and Sonia Boyce to produce a reframing of art-historical narratives.
