Biography

Seyni Awa Camara (b. c. 1945, Bignona region, Casamance, Senegal) is a Senegalese sculptor internationally recognized for her powerful, multi-figured terracotta works rooted in ancestral knowledge, spirituality, and personal mythology. Working primarily with clay she gathers herself, Camara hand-builds densely populated sculptures featuring women, children, hybrid beings, and spiritual guardians. Her practice is deeply connected to Casamance cosmology, ritual, and oral storytelling traditions, and she is regarded as one of the most significant contemporary artists of West Africa. Her work has appeared in major global exhibitions, including the Dakar Biennale, the Venice Biennale, and international museum shows highlighting African contemporary art.
