Biography

Ja'Tovia Gary (born 1984, Dallas, Texas) is an American interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker based between Dallas and New York. Working across film, video installation, performance, and collage, Gary’s practice explores Black feminist thought, archival memory, race, and spiritual survival through experimental moving image. Her work is characterized by layered montage, archival intervention, and poetic visual language that reconfigures historical narratives. Gary has received numerous recognitions and has exhibited at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her work is held in leading public collections.
