Biography

Firelei Báez (1981- ) is a Dominican artist working across painting, installation, sculpture, and works on paper. Her work includes references to regionally specific mythology, science fiction, and fantasy. She often paints over historical material, such as found maps, manuals, and travelogues, layering figures over them. Much of her work features female characters and self-portraits.  Báez received her BFA from Cooper Union in 2001 and her MFA from Hunter College in 2010. She also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
