Overtown Pitch: Game Changers Mural ​

Overtown:

To honor those who have championed change, equality, and inclusivity in soccer, and to celebrate Miami's role as host of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora (Miami MoCAAD) commissioned artist Stefan Smith to create a groundbreaking mural titled "Overtown Pitch: Game Changers” at the Carver building located at 801 NW 3rd Avenue, Miami, Fl 33136 in Overtown. Through an innovative blend of art and technology, the mural features an augmented reality and digital component, inviting viewers to engage with the stories of Black soccer players who have made indelible marks on the sport as well as engage in a shootout soccer game.​

For the mural Overtown Pitch: Game Changers, Stefan, a dedicated soccer fan, was inspired by the Miami Edison High Girls Soccer Team, whose championship victories bring pride and hope to the community. Most of the Miami Edison team are members of the Little Haiti Football Club, the only free soccer program in the state, which provides free support to over two hundred girls and boys ages 5 to 19.​

Stefan Smith​

Stefan Smith is a talented artist and muralist from South Florida with a unique blend of architectural precision and artistic skill. His creative journey began during his studies in the Master of Architecture program at FAU, where he honed his skills and passion for art. Following his graduation in 2015, Stefan dedicated three years to the field of architecture and design before realizing his true calling lay in the areas of contemporary art and large-scale murals.​​

An accomplished muralist with a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for the human experience, Stefan’s work is visually captivating and complex, often combining elements of nature, such as foliage, plants, and human figures. His goal as an artist is to demonstrate the transformative potential of creativity and leave a lasting impact, particularly in underserved communities. ​

Crystal Dunn​

Crystal Dunn is a versatile player for the U.S. Women's National Team and NJ/NY Gotham FC, known for her ability to excel in multiple positions including defense, midfield, and forward.
She had a standout college career at UNC, winning the Hermann Trophy and leading her team to an NCAA Championship in 2012. Internationally, she was part of the USWNT squad that won the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. Off the field, Dunn is an advocate for social justice, actively promoting racial equality and gender equity in sports.

Kylian Mbappé Goals That SHOCKED The World​

Kylian Mbappé is a French professional footballer who plays as a forward for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and the French national team. Known for his incredible speed, technical skills, and goal-scoring ability, Mbappé has won multiple Ligue 1 titles and was instrumental in France's victory at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

People need to know that there were Black men in the 1940s and 50s who made a big difference. Folks who really made civil rights happen in Miami were not the school teachers; not black business people; not the Black privileged. Jacqui Colyer | "Union Leaders And Growth Of PortMiami"

Judge Henderson founded Local 1416 in 1936 through his courage and grit. Cleveland Turner led in the 50s and 60s and influenced the move from Dodge Island to the PortMiami. Clarence Pittman Jr. was quiet power whose leadership made people proud to be a longshoreman. Alan Davis | Education Important

The Dr. Samuel H. Johnson, uncle of Dr. Dorothy Fields, was a longshoreman who worked the docks in the 1920s during summers while attending Morehouse College and Meharry Medical School so he and his six siblings could get an education and return to Miami as professionals. Created Middle Class

Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields | Ladder To Middle Class

Lovette 'Queen Of The South' McGill | First Women's Conference And Support Of Student Scholarships

Lovette McGill helped organize the first women's conference for the International Longshoremen's Association held in Jacksonville in March 2022. Over 400 women attended from across the industry. She also helps with the scholarship program named after former Local 1416 President, Clarence Pittman, Jr., which awards $4,000 to $5,000 scholarships. Torin Ragin | 800 Members Strong

Local 1416 has close to 800 members with longstanding tradition of serving Miami-Dade County, but especially Overtown, Miami Gardens, Liberty City and Cutler Ridge.
