Biography

Titus Kaphar (b. 1976, Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA) is an American painter, sculptor, filmmaker and installation artist whose multidisciplinary work interrogates the representation of Black subjects in Western art-history and the shaping of memory through image. He deconstructs canonical visual forms—cutting, tarring, draping and reconfiguring paintings and sculptures—to reveal hidden narratives, marginalized figures and the mechanics of exclusion. His practice proposes an amended, more inclusive account of history in which Black lives are visible, and visual language is expanded.
