Biography
Sonia Gomes (b. 1948, Caetanópolis, Minas Gerais, Brazil) is a Brazilian sculptor and assemblage artist renowned for transforming found textiles, fabrics, cords, driftwood, and everyday objects into dynamic, large-scale sculptures. Her work combines abstraction with tactile, organic forms and draws heavily on Afro-Brazilian traditions, memory, and cultural heritage. Through stitching, tying, and suspending materials, Gomes explores themes of resilience, transformation, and the histories embedded in discarded or overlooked objects. Her sculptures have been featured in major international exhibitions and biennials, and she is recognized as one of the leading contemporary artists engaging with materiality and Afro-Brazilian identity today.
