Biography

Collen Maswanganyi (b. 1977, Noblehoek, Limpopo, South Africa) is a South African visual artist known for his intricately carved and painted wooden sculptures that explore the intersection of tradition and modern life. Coming from a family of Tsonga woodcarvers, Maswanganyi expands on inherited carving practices by incorporating contemporary narratives, personal symbolism, and social commentary. His expressive figures often depict everyday life, cultural memory, ancestral lineage, and the evolving identity of post-apartheid South Africa, blending craftsmanship with layered storytelling.
