Biography

Loïs Mailou Jones⁠ (1905-1998) was an American artist. She worked across painting, costume, textile, and collage. Jones style continued to evolve throughout her career responding to her various influences and international travels. She created variety of subjects ranging from landscapes to figurative portraits to Cubist renditions of African masks. She taught at Howard University in the art department from 1930-1977 and trained countless artists during her tenure.  Jones received her undergraduate degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1927. She received her graduate degree from the Design Art School of Boston in 1928.
