Bisa Butler (1973- ) is a textile artist , originally trained as a painter. Her works explore the connection between the marginalization as quilts as a subject and her subjects historic marginalization. The result is a depiction of family, community, and legacy. This quilt portrays abolitionist Harriett Tubman who was able to transport 70 enslaved Black people to freedom up North. ⁠
