Hold Me Close

Hold Me Close highlights a new body of Butler’s quilted portraiture created during a politically and emotionally charged period. The exhibition centers on themes of empathy, human connection, and the need for tenderness in challenging times. On view at Jeffrey Deitch Los Angeles, the show brings together large-scale textile works that reflect resilience, identity, and the shared stories within Black life and history.

Exhibition Description

In this exhibition, Butler uses cotton, silk, lace, velvet, netting, sequins, beads, and rhinestones to construct layered portraits that feel intimate and deeply expressive. Each piece functions like a visual diary—capturing memory, emotion, and lived experience through fabric. The works invite viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with the humanity embedded in each portrait, offering both solace and a call for compassion.
