Biography

Ben Enwonwu (Odinigwe Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu MBE, b.  14 July 1917, d. 5 February 1994) was a pioneering Nigerian painter and sculptor whose career spanned colonial, independence-era and post-colonial Nigeria. Born into an Igbo artistic family, he fused indigenous Nigerian aesthetic traditions with Western modernist techniques, and played a foundational role in shaping modern African art.
