Biography
Althea McNish (1924-2020) was a Trinidadian-British textile designer. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, she assisted with her mother's dressmaking business as a child. She was a member of the Trinidad Arts Society and had her first exhibition at the age of 16. Relocating to London with her family in the 1950s, she attended art schools and was encouraged by mentors to apply her skills to textiles. Her style is known for its vibrant, contrasting colors and tropical flora and fauna. She was one of the first Afro-Caribbean designers to reach international acclaim.
McNish took courses at the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts, the Central School of Arts and Crafts, and the Royal College of Art.
