Melvin Edwards (May 4, 1937 – March 30, 2026) was a pioneering American sculptor who transformed welded steel into a powerful language of memory, resistance, and witness. Best known for his Lynch Fragments series, he assembled chains, tools, and industrial forms into works that confront histories of racial violence while honoring resilience, labor, and the ongoing struggle for freedom.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Edwards expanded the possibilities of postwar sculpture while remaining deeply grounded in Black life and global movements for liberation. His passing marks the loss of a vital artistic voice, but his work continues to challenge, remember, and inspire generations to come. 🕊️
