Biography

Tom Lloyd (b. 1929 – d. 1996) was an American artist, activist, and community organizer known for pioneering work in electronically programmed light sculpture and socially-engaged art. He studied at the Pratt Institute (1949–1952) and the Brooklyn Museum Art School (1961) and began making art that fused abstraction, technology and community activism in the 1960s. Lloyd’s sculptural works harnessed electric bulbs, lenses, wiring and motion to explore light, perception and presence; he also co-founded the exhibition and institutional arm of Black and Puerto Rican art through community spaces such as the Store Front Museum / Paul Robeson Theatre in Jamaica, Queens.
