Biography

Sungi Mlengeya (b. 1991, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) is a self-taught painter who works primarily in acrylic on canvas. Her works are marked by minimalism and strong use of negative space. She often depicts dark figures—mostly Black women—in black or brown tones against white backgrounds. These portraits evoke strength, calm, presence and pay tribute to the women in her life, exploring balance between stillness and movement.
