Biography

Norman Lewis (1909-1979) was an American painter and printmaker. He was a prominent member of the Harlem Renaissance movement in New York. Early in his career, he created figurative work in the social realist school. He felt later that social realism was unable to invoke the social changes he wanted so he shifted his style towards abstract expressionism. Despite, this stylistic shift he remained committed to social change.
