Biography

Nellie Mae Rowe (1900-1982) was a self-taught American  artist known for her vibrant and whimsical creations. Her work, often featuring lively depictions of animals, people, and fantastical scenes, has earned her a lasting legacy. She created works across various mediums including paper, collages, altered photographs, dolls, home installations, and sculptural environments. Rowe believed that art-making was a way to recover a girlhood lost to poverty and labor.
