Biography

Mildred Jean Thompson (1936-2003) was an American artist who worked across painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and photography. Her abstract paintings pulsate color and radiate movement. Thompson's work focuses on conveying the invisible and microscopic. She was inspired by fields of science and sound, and her work often references quantum physics, cosmology, theosophy, and music (American jazz and classical European).  Thompson received a BA from Howard University in 1957 with a focus on painting, art history, and art education. Thompson was awarded a summer scholarship to attend the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
