Biography
Mary Sibande (1982- ) is a South African visual artist whose work is highly multidisciplinary, employing mediums including sculpture, painting, photography, and more. Sibande's art is informed by themes including race, gender, and identity. A large aspect of her work is exploring the repercussions of apartheid and its effect on her and her family. She does this through her sculptural alter ego, Sophie. Through Sophie, Sibande is able to rewrite her family's history, paying close attention to domestic service.
Sibande received a degree in Fine Arts at The University of Johannesburg in 2007.
