Biography

Lou Stovall (born January 1, 1937, Athens, Georgia – died September 20, 2023, Washington, D.C.) was an American printmaker, painter, and master screenprinter whose work and leadership profoundly shaped Black print culture in the United States. He was the founder of Workshop, Inc. (est. 1968) in Washington, D.C., one of the most influential print studios supporting African American artists, where he collaborated with generations of artists to produce landmark screenprints. Stovall’s own artistic practice drew from African American history, African and Asian aesthetics, spirituality, music, and community memory, emphasizing rhythm, balance, and graphic clarity. His legacy endures through both his artwork and his pivotal role as a cultural builder and facilitator of artistic production.
