Biography

Kandy G Lopez (born 1987, Bayonne, NJ) is a Dominican-American visual artist whose work explores identity, visibility, and the everyday lives of marginalized communities. Working across fiber art, painting, and mixed media, Lopez is known for her large-scale embroidered portraits made from yarn and mesh, which translate painterly techniques into textured textile forms. Her practice centers people from her surrounding communities, celebrating their presence, individuality, and cultural histories. Lopez lives and works in South Florida, where she is also an Associate Professor of Art + Design at Nova Southeastern University. Lopez’s work is rooted in identity, cultural memory, representation, and visibility — especially concerning Afro-Caribbean and diasporic experiences. She centers marginalized individuals in her portraits: people from her community, everyday “real” people, sometimes strangers, often chosen because they carry a distinctive presence or energy.
