Biography

John West Tjupurrula (born c. 1982, Western Desert, Australia) is a Pintupi artist whose paintings are grounded in ancestral narratives, Country, and the visual languages of Western Desert art. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Tjupurrula translates Dreaming stories associated with his Country into dynamic compositions of dots, lines, and layered color fields. His works map sacred sites, waterholes, and travel routes, communicating cultural knowledge through abstraction while maintaining deep ties to Indigenous law and custodianship. Tjupurrula’s practice reflects the continuity of Pintupi culture and the living presence of land, memory, and ceremony.
