Biography

Frank Wimberley (b. August 31, 1926 – d. October 9, 2025) was an American abstract painter whose six-decade career bridged the legacy of Abstract Expressionism with the experience of African American artists in the post-war era. Born in Pleasantville, New Jersey, Wimberley studied at Howard University with instructors including Loïs Mailou Jones, James Lesesne Wells and James A. Porter — deeply rooting his practice in African American art traditions. His paintings are distinguished by richly textured surfaces, layered pigment application and gestural brushwork that echo jazz improvisation and evoke luminous space and emotional depth.
