Biography

Debra Cartwright (1988- ) is an American painter and printmaker. Her work balances abstraction and figuration. Cartwright explores the relationship between the Black female body and American medical history. She examines how historical systems have influenced present discrepancies.  Cartwright received her BA in Art History from the University of Virginia in 2010 and AA in Communications Design from Parsons School of Design in 2012. She received her MFA from Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts in 2023.
