Biography
David Hartt (born 1967, Montreal, Canada) is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist based in Philadelphia. Working across photography, film, installation, and sound, Hartt’s practice explores history, architecture, modernity, and the cultural conditions that shape social and built environments. His work is characterized by research-driven inquiry and a cinematic visual language that blends documentary and speculative approaches.
Hartt received a BFA from the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa in 1991 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994. He has received numerous honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a United States Artists Fellowship. He has participated in major international exhibitions and biennials, including representing Canada at the Venice Biennale in 2013. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and is held in the collections of major museums across North America and Europe.
