Biography

American photographer Consuelo Kanaga (1894–1978) was a pioneering figure in socially conscious and modernist photography. Working across photojournalism and fine art, she is best known for intimate portraits—particularly of African American artists and communities—and empathetic documentary work. Associated with straight photography and the San Francisco camera circle, Kanaga used the camera as a tool for social awareness, dignity, and human connection.
