Augustus Francis: Materia Prima
Augustus Francis presents Materia Prima, his debut solo exhibition in New York City. The exhibition explores the fluid interplay between matter and abstraction. The Oltremarino series—painted in the English countryside—emphasizes deep blues and flowing compositions, while the New York series bursts with vibrant reds and neon hues, mirroring the city's dynamism. Through layered textures, wax infusions, and dynamic pigment applications, Francis redefines the alchemical process of painting as an exploration of transformation, energy, and the sublime.
This exhibition will take place at ACA Galleries at 173 10th Ave New York, NY 10011.
Exhibition Description
Materia Prima, referencing the foundational substance of alchemy, encapsulates Augustus Francis’ evolving approach to abstraction. His signature "flow painting" technique allows liquid paint to cascade across the canvas, creating ethereal, atmospheric compositions. By introducing dense, tactile materials—impasto wax, dry pigments, and reflective elements—Francis disrupts the surface’s fluidity, engaging viewers in a sensory dialogue between movement and materiality. Inspired by both natural landscapes and urban energy, the works in this exhibition embody a duality: the tranquil, striated expanses of Oltremarino and the frenetic, luminous energy of New York.
