Biography

Theaster Gates (1973- ) is an American artist who works within social practice installation. Gates has a deep interest in urban planning and land development. Through performance, sculpture, and installation, he explores "forgotten" spaces and underserved neighborhoods and works to revitalize them.   Gates received his BS from Iowa State University in 1996. He received his MA from the University of Cape Town in 1998 and his MS from Iowa State University in 2006.
