Biography

Suzanne Jackson (b. 1944, St. Louis, Missouri) is an American painter, poet, and educator whose practice spans more than five decades. Emerging in Los Angeles in the 1960s, she founded Gallery 32, an influential artist-run space that supported Black artists during the Black Arts Movement. Jackson’s work has evolved from figurative and symbolic compositions to materially innovative abstractions composed of poured acrylic “skins” that detach from traditional canvas supports. Her atmospheric, sculptural paintings explore gesture, color, ecology, and spirituality while expanding the boundaries between painting and installation.
