Biography
Leroy Campbell (born July 21, 1956, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina) is an American artist whose mixed-media practice explores African American history, Gullah-Geechee heritage, family, resilience, spirituality, and collective uplift. Working across painting, collage, acrylic, paper, tapestry, and organic materials, Campbell examines memory, ancestry, and cultural pride through silhouetted figures, elongated forms, and narrative compositions that connect the past to the present.
Campbell is self-taught. His work often engages Sankofa, Gullah-Geechee history, Harlem and Brooklyn cultural memory, and the idea of humanity as a shared garden, using mixed media and storytelling to consider interdependence, healing, and Black self-determination. His visual language is shaped by his South Carolina roots, New York experience, and a sustained commitment to teaching through art.
His work has been shown through Richard Beavers Gallery, Overdue Recognition Art Gallery, the Harlem Fine Arts Show, and other community-based and gallery exhibitions, including Historical Backbone: The Resilience and Determination of a People in Harlem. Leroy Campbell is based in Atlanta, Georgia.
