Biography

Gerard Sekoto (1913-1993) was a South African painter and musician who was a leading figure in Black South African art .  His art played a large part in the cultural development of the region. Sekoto is primarily known for his paintings of everyday life derived from his own experiences. His paintings of Black urban life advanced a type of Social Realism, a frank depiction of daily life.
