Biography

Charles Harris (1908-1998) was an American photographer. From 1936-1975, Harris documented life in the Black Pittsburgh neighborhoods for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of America's oldest Black newspapers. He often often celebrities when they visited Pittsburgh, including Harry Belafonte, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Little Richard, and Ray Charles.  In 2001, the Carnegie Museum of Art purchased the negatives and all rights from the artist’s family and continues to shepherd Harris's legacy.
