Biography

Buqaqawuli Nobakada (b. 2000, Western Cape, South Africa) is a contemporary mixed-media artist whose sculptural paintings explore black femininity, luxury, and identity through intricate craft and material innovations. Raised between the Philippi township (Cape Town) and a village in Lady Frere (Eastern Cape), Nobakada draws from her architectural training and lived experience to create layered works that centre Black women in moments of self-fashioning, dignity and generational legacy. Her signature medium—acrylic paint applied to hand-prepared lace paper, often embellished with gold jewellery or clay accents—evokes opulence and softness while making a powerful statement about visibility, self-assertion, and craft as liberation.
