Biography

Belkis Ayón was a Cuban visual artist whose powerful collagraphs reimagined myth, spirituality, and collective memory through monumental black-and-white compositions. Rooted in the secretive Afro-Cuban society of Abakuá, Ayón reinterpreted its origin stories—especially those of the female figure Sikán—through a lens that foregrounded silence, ritual, and belonging.
