Biography

Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) was an American painter and photographer. He began his career as a painter before taking up photography. These early paintings include landscapes and still lifes. He is known for unflinching, direct, large oil portraits of Black people. Overall, his work is known for the attitude and style that comes off the subjects. Hendricks graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1967. He received both his BFA and MFA from Yale University.
